Training for health and safety representatives

Last updated: 29 July 2025

To exercise all their powers and perform all their functions, a health and safety representative (HSR) and their deputies are required to attend a five-day initial training course approved by the Work Health and Safety Commission.

A person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) must allow their HSRs and Deputy HSRs to attend this course. The PCBU must also pay their course fee, other reasonable costs and the HSR's usual rate of pay while they attend the course.

Approved training providers

Only the Work Health and Safety Commission can approve training providers to deliver courses for HSRs.

You can choose from the list of approved training providers on the HSR Matters hub.
