First aid needs vary in every workplace. The number of first aiders and the type of first aid arrangements required will depend on:
- the size and layout of the workplace
- the hazards and risks at the workplace
- whether the workplace is remote or isolated
- the distance to medical services or ambulance support
- the number of workers, where they work and whether they do shift work.
Nature of work and workplace hazards
Certain work environments have a higher risk of injury and illness due to the nature of work being carried out and the nature of the hazards in the workplace. If your workplace uses hazardous chemicals, check the safety data sheets (SDS) for information about health effects, exposure controls and first aid measures.
Size and location of the workplace
When planning first aid, consider how quickly an injured or unwell person can get help. This includes the size and layout of the workplace, access between work areas and the time it may take for ambulance services, hospitals or medical centres to respond.
First aid equipment and facilities should be located at convenient points and in areas where there is a higher risk of injury or illness occurring.
Larger workplaces may need first aid in more than one location, especially if:
- workers are spread across a wide area
- work is carried out far from emergency services
- parts of the workplace are difficult to access
- the workplace has multiple floors.
Number and composition of workers
When working out the size of your workforce, include any contractors, subcontractors and volunteers as your workforce may change over time.
