During a recent work health and safety inspection on a farm, WorkSafe was advised that a quad bike had been involved in a rollover incident. The incident involved a worker operating alone, and a review of the circumstances showed how key safety controls helped reduce the risk of serious injury.
Incident overview
While mustering sheep alone on a broadacre grain and sheep farm, a casual worker rolled a quad bike while riding downhill. Fortunately, the worker escaped with minor injuries and was able to contact the farm’s second-in-command to report the incident and provide his location.
Contributing factors
Several factors appear to have contributed to the rollover, including steep ground, weather conditions, driver fatigue and travelling too fast for the terrain.
Key safety controls
In this incident, several key safety controls were in place. The quad bike was fitted with a crush protection device, the worker was wearing a helmet and the worker had a mobile phone to call for help.
The crush protection device prevented the quad bike from landing on the worker, while the helmet reduced the risk of a head injury. Having a mobile phone enabled the worker to report the incident and provide their location for assistance quickly.
Together, these controls most likely helped prevent a more serious injury or fatality.
