WorkSafe is inviting public submissions on the reforms under the Dangerous Goods Safety Act 2004 (DGS Act) and associated regulations as outlined in the Consultation Regulatory Impact Statement (CRIS).

The purpose of CRIS is to consider the proposed DGS Act and regulation amendments as identified in the 2014 review and through subsequent internal departmental consultation. In addition, the CRIS provides an opportunity to obtain feedback on those proposals and to elicit any additional reform ideas stakeholders wish to be considered.

The CRIS considers each proposal in detail, outlining the intent and rationale and arguments for and against the proposal. It then seeks feedback from stakeholders in relation to these proposals or other suggestions for improvements, including commentary of the potential costs of a proposal.

The Work Health and Safety Commission (WHSC) and the Mining and Petroleum Advisory Committee (MAPAC) invite public submissions on the draft Code of practice: Emergency management for Western Australian mines.

The Code assists a person conducting a business or undertaking, including the mine operator, to meet the requirements of the Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022 in relation to emergency management planning at a mine site.

The Code provides guidance on:

• establishing procedure development and content
• maintenance of the emergency plan
• how to test the emergency plan
• when to use the emergency plan.

The draft Code of practice, Excavation work, has been developed by the Work Health and Safety Commission.

The Code builds on the transitional code of practice, Excavation, developed under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984, and incorporates new requirements following the introduction of the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WHS Act).

The Code assists a person conducting a business or undertaking to meet the requirements of the WHS Act and associated regulations in relation to excavation work. The Code also provides guidance on:

• controlling access to excavations, including not allowing people into excavations when they are not required
• minimising the time workers spend in excavations
• providing suitable access to and egress from excavations
• mechanising work to be carried out in excavations
• providing adequate induction, training and information for those involved in excavation work
• conducting emergency planning.

The draft Code of practice, Person overboard – prevention and response, has been developed by the Work Health and Safety Commission.

The Code builds on the transitional code of practice, Man overboard: prevention and response, developed under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984, and incorporates new requirements following the introduction of the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WHS Act).

The Code assists a person conducting a business or undertaking to meet the requirements of the WHS Act and associated regulations in relation to work carried out on commercial vessels. The Code also provides guidance on:

• safe systems of work to prevent person overboard situations
• effective emergency measures to minimise the risks of injury, harm or death in the event of a person overboard incident
• risk management processes to address potential hazards and risks in relation to a person overboard situation.
